The Great Outdoors (1988)

Directed by Howard Deutch Released June 17th, 1988 Written by John Hughes Movie Synopsis Courtesy of IMDB "A Chicago man's hope for a peaceful family vacation in the woods is shattered when the annoying in-laws drop in." Alright, I was pleasantly surprised with this movie! I was a little worried at first because of some of the people who had recommended this movie to me. Let's just say we normally have different definitions of funny. But this movie really did come through! It was entertaining, the jokes weren't super cheesy, and it had two of my favorite Johns. What also surprised me was the fact that this movie was written by my hero John Hughes (John #1). I had no idea, but it also has me thinking. John Hughes always directed his own movies, so the fact that he didn't direct this movie makes me question as to why. So the first thing that I found is that this wasn't the first time Hughes and Deutch worked together. Apparently, Hug...

Weird Science (1985)

Directed by John Hughes Released August 2, 1985 Written by John Hughes Movie Synopsis Courtesy of IMDB "Two high school nerds attempt to create the perfect woman, but she turns out to be more than that." Welcome to another edition of John Hughes owned the movie industry in the 80s. It seems like I can't go more than a few weeks without bringing up his name.  In this classic, we see a lot of the staples of the 80s that I have discussed before. With that being said, a lot of what I am going to talk about is more about the story lines/situations in the movie. Before we get into those story lines, can we just acknowledge for a moment those horrible gym clothes. I have known for a long time that back in the 70s and 80s short-shorts on guys was a norm, but it is still an unusual sight to see. Could they have made those any tighter or shorter? Present day, you put girls in those kinds of outfits, let alone guys, you would be in some serious trouble...

Uncle Buck (1989)

Directed by John Hughes Released August 18, 1989 Written by John Hughes Movie Synopsis Courtesy of IMDB "Bachelor and all round slob, Buck, babysits his brother's rebellious teenage daughter and her cute younger brother and sister." What is there is say about this movie? I guess the best thing to say is it is clearly a character based movie. It is not the story, the sets, the action, or anything like that. This movie was clearly made based on a character and his life.  Uncle Buck is the uncle that we all wish we had and that we wish we didn't have. Played by the genius John Candy (I already praised him in my Spaceballs  blog), he is a special kind of person. He is clearly a mess, both as a person and his life in general. He doesn't have a real job, his relationship is well awkward, and his own brother doesn't really trust him. Buck seems like the slacker kid in school who some how found a way to con his way through life without being b...

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Directed by John Hughes Released June 11, 1986 Screenplay by John Hughes Movie Synopsis Courtesy of IMDB “A high school wise guy is determined to have a day off from school, despite what the Principal thinks of that.” Now this blog is going to be extra hard to write, in terms of trying not to write a novel on this movie. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is probably my favorite movie of all time. It never gets old to me and there are way too many quotable moments in this movie. On top of that, the characters are perfect and I for once do not have a real problem with any of them (only slightly with one, but we will get to that). The first thing that I want to throw out there is that if you love this movie as much as I do, never ever read the screenplay.   It is completely different from the movie and in my opinion if the movie was made how the screenplay was written it wouldn’t have been as successful. For those of you curious, here are the biggest ...

The Breakfast Club (1985)

Directed by John Hughes Released February 15th, 1985 Written by John Hughes Movie Synopsis Courtesy of IMDB "Five high school students meet in Saturday detention and discover how they have a lot more in common than they thought." How do I even begin to talk about and describe one of my favorite movies of all time? I guess the first order of business is to explain what I mentioned in one of my previous blogs: that The Breakfast Club is much different and better than Fast Times at Ridgemont High,  even though they are about similar things.  I guess the first point I will make is the casting, since I thought that was the biggest problem in Fast Times.  In The Breakfast Club  you have the genius that is the "Brat Pack.". Emilio Estevez (Andy), Anthony Michael Hall (Brian), Judd Nelson (Bender), Molly Ringwald (Claire), and Ally Sheedy (Allison). These actors where the stars of the movie industry at the time, they all had something spec...

Sixteen Candles (1984)

Directed by John Hughes Released May 4th, 1984 Written by John Hughes Movie Synopsis Courtesy of IMDB "A girl's 'sweet' sixteenth birthday becomes anything but special, as she suffers from every embarrassment possible." Since this is the first movie on my list by John Hughes, we have to talk about this man's genius for a second. John Hughes's films are the definition of 80s movies. Chances are you have seen at least one of his movies in your life if not more. He has directed movies such as Uncle Buck, all of the Home Alone movies , National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pretty in Pink, Weird Science, Breakfast Club, Flubber and these are just his most well-known films. You can check him out at the link below, because he is worth reading about. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000455/ Most of the classic 80s movies, and my favorites, are from the genius that is John Hughes. He just has a way of portr...
