One Crazy Summer (1986)

Directed by Savage Steve Holland Released August 8th, 1986 Written by Savage Steve Holland Movie Synopsis Courtesy of IMDB "An aspiring teenage cartoonist and his friends come to the aid of a singer trying to save her family property from developers." So many of you are going to be surprised by this, I actually enjoyed this movie! Which is surprising for two reasons. One, it is clearly a stupid movie. I mean just watch the trailer if you haven't seen the movie before.  That guy's voice in itself explains a lot. But reason two that it is surprising that I enjoyed this movie is because I am not a huge John Cusack fan. I can honestly say, though, I enjoyed his performance in this movie. Maybe because compared to most of the other characters he was the normal one? Even more normal than his strange character in Say Anything... Now I think the reason that I didn't mind this kind of stupid movie is because it was done with a purpose. Th...

Stand By Me (1986)

Directed by Rob Reiner Released November 26th, 1986 Novel by Stephen King Screenplay by Raynold Gideon & Bruce A. Evans Movie Synopsis Courtesy of IMDB "After the death of one of his friends, a writer recounts a boyhood journey with his friends to find the body of a missing boy." Stand By Me  I think falls into the category of a John Hughes type of movie, which is to say it portrays kids in a real way. It isn't forced, it doesn't feel like adults trying to think like kids. The authenticity about it makes the audience remember back to their childhoods and things they used to do and think about at the age of 12 or 13. Yeah this movie could seem like  The Breakfast Club  or  Fast Times at Ridgemont High  in the sense that not a lot happens and we are just following around a group of friends. But when done well, movies like that carry more of an impact because they are relatable to the audience therefore the audience doesn't get bored...

Top Gun (1986)

Directed By Tony Scott Released May 16th, 1986 Written by Jim Cash, Jack Epps, Jr., Ehud Yonay, &Warren Skaaren Movie Synopsis Courtesy of IMDB "As students at the United States Navy's elite fighter weapons school compete to be the best in the class, one daring young pilot learns a few things from a civilian instructors that are not taught in the classroom." Let's see if I remember how to do this. It has been awhile since my last blog.  Well for starters, as I have pointed out in many of my other blogs, a movie starts from the second the opening credits begin. Even though they are just opening credits, this is the time to get amerced in the world of the movie. So if a movie is not setting you up with the credits then they are not doing their job of getting you ready for the film and getting you, the viewer, into the right mindset for the film. With that said, Tony Scott made a great choice for the opening credit scene. The music used was s...

The Color Purple (1986)

Directed by Steven Spielberg Released February 7, 1986 Screenplay written by Menno Meyjes Novel written by Alice Walker Movie Synopsis Courtesy of IMDB "A black Southern women struggles to find her identity after suffering abuse from her father and others over four decades." I bet many of you are surprised to see this movie on the blog. It is not the same style and genre as a lot of the movies on this blog, but you know what it does have in common with those movies? This movie was made in the 80s, therefore I am going to talk about it! Now, not only does this movie portray a very hard part of history, but it also covers a lot of dark and disturbing subject matter. With that said, it is important for the creators of the movie to do their research on the history of this time period. Everything from the sets, to costumes, music, and most importantly the language. This is the part that stuck out to me the most in this movie, the way the characters all t...

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)

Directed by John Hughes Released June 11, 1986 Screenplay by John Hughes Movie Synopsis Courtesy of IMDB “A high school wise guy is determined to have a day off from school, despite what the Principal thinks of that.” Now this blog is going to be extra hard to write, in terms of trying not to write a novel on this movie. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is probably my favorite movie of all time. It never gets old to me and there are way too many quotable moments in this movie. On top of that, the characters are perfect and I for once do not have a real problem with any of them (only slightly with one, but we will get to that). The first thing that I want to throw out there is that if you love this movie as much as I do, never ever read the screenplay.   It is completely different from the movie and in my opinion if the movie was made how the screenplay was written it wouldn’t have been as successful. For those of you curious, here are the biggest ...
